World Gate Online Chapter 10: Sense of Accomplishment

Chapter 10: Sense of Accomplishment

Let’s start over again.

A certain player had just finished the character creation and appeared in the square plaza of [Drachedge], the starting town of [Etrano] the Southern Kingdom.

The player had short black hair and a physique which suggest a fragile woman making every male player around stare in beauty. However, the sad truth isn’t so nice.

The player’s name is [Geeves], and he’s a boy.

To those that knew him, they can only look at the other male players in pity, to those that doesn’t, they can only see a beautiful woman.

“…Somehow, I’m getting a lot of stares…are they sizing me out?”

Normally, he is a new player, that’s why he thought that the stares around him means that they are checking whether Geeves was someone worth to party or not.

Well, he was obviously wrong but soon enough, one person did ask him.

He noticed a silver wolf werebeast make his way towards him.

“Hey there, do you want to form a party with me? Since we both just started playing, I think it will be helpful to help each other out.”

“Hmm…well, first of all, connections are important. He might turn useful later on.”

Geeves thought calmly as he size up the werebeast.

“Well…alright then. The name’s Geeves”

The werebeast revealed a complex facial expression, though it seemed that he tried not to let it show.

“My name’s Rice. It’s nice to meet you Geeves.”

“Rice!? As in Kanin?....wait….”

At first, Geeves was weirded out by his name. After all, someone naming themselves as rice seemed rather stupid but then suddenly remembered someone having the same name.

Kanin Fried, a classmate of his in college as well as a close friend.

He quickly asked if he was right and it turns out that he is!

Geeves then introduced himself as Gavin Fastmark to the bewildered Rice.

After chatting for a while, the two of them partied up and decided to look around first.

Though, because of Geeves’ getting bored already and wanted to hunt monsters, they decided to stop and head for the east gate to hunt.

For some reason, Geeves felt like talking to the guard stationed at the east gate.

Geeves has a rather talkative nature and kept talking to someone he didn’t know even in the real world.

To this, most of his friends would be surprised when they found him already befriending someone completely stranger the moment they looked away from him.

Though, even Geeves was surprised that he activated a quest just by talking to the guard.

“There is a village nearby outside the wall that is being troubled by monsters. Though the monsters may be weak and the guards can usually take care of it, it is still best to help them as you hunt.”

Do you want to accept the quest?
YESNO

“Yes!”

It was too sudden that he accepted it immediately due to his excitement.

“Oh no, maybe I should’ve discussed it with Rice first?”

As if to confirm his thoughts, Rice complained.

“W-what are you accepting it immediately for idiot! Why didn’t you ask me first?”

“Are you gonna decline?”

For some reason, the voice Geeves let out was deeper than imagined.

Geeves also stared anticipating Rice answer while wishing “Please don’t mind. Please don’t mind. Please don’t mind. Please don’t mind. Please don’t mind.”

Since it could get troublesome later on if Rice actually wanted to decline it.

Though, it seems Rice misunderstood and stepped back a little with a bead of sweat trailing down his temple.

“N-no…anyway, at least ask for my opinion first next time!”

“Suuure~”

He really swore to himself to do so next time and went back to his easy going attitude.

“Haah….0 STR and 0 VIT…how am I supposed to deal a damage”

Affirming his status, Geeves sighed as he stares at the 0s in his status.

Though he had an extremely high DEX for someone of his level, it cost his STR and VIT to 0.

“And a 2 LUK…..guess I’m really unlucky….”

Well, the luck really had no connection to it, as proof, Rice’s LUK was also 2 but isn’t as unfortunate. Though maybe the luck itself differs from person to person, like, what could be considered as lucky for them or the like.

With a sullen mood, Geeves followed Rice towards the village.

+ + +

“Well, that was rather quick.”

“Yeah, though I was getting worried when slicing attacks won’t work, simple punches and kicks would do it anyway.”

At first, Geeves was entirely leeching off on Rice.

Since his slicing and piercing attacks won’t work, the [Beginner’s Dagger] was useless and so they relied on their fists and kicks.

However, to Geeves who has no attack power, he can only leech off on Rice and gain EXP through him like that.

After levelling up once, Geeves allocated all of his stat points to STR and was finally able to join the hunt.

Walking back to the village, they found a guard and quickly took their reward.

After thanking the guard, they were about to leave and continue to hunt when they were stopped by the guard’s next words.

“Actually, there has been sighting of a bear loitering about around here. Can I trouble you again by confirming it? And if it’s true, I want you to eliminate it if possible.”

*ting*

Do you want to accept the quest?
YESNO

““A chain quest!!!””

Geeves and Rice’s mind were in sync.

This time, Geeves made sure to wait until Rice’s decision before carelessly accepting.

In the end, the two decided to give it a try and accepted.

Walking deeper into the [Pliht Forest], they continued to search for signs of the [Young Bear].

“10 Silvers, 10 Silvers, 10 Silvers, 10 Silvers, 10 Silvers, 10 Silvers.”

As they walk, Geeves eyes turned silver as he continued to think about the reward this time. Though, it soon died out and he was completely bored.

10 minutes later, there’s finally a clue.

A tree in front of them has a branch broken away, looking more closely, there’s a slight footmark that resembled a bear beneath it as well as claw marks on the broken branch.

“Looks like it’s real.”

“Yeah, be on your guard.”

The two switched to serious mode and drew their [Beginner’s Dagger].

However, with nothing going on for a while, Geeves was about to get bored again when Rice shuuted him up.

“Shhh! I can hear something…”

“…What’s he talking about? It’s too peaceful here…”

Geeves wondered if Rice really did hear something, or just some rustling of the leaves from the wind when Rice immediately shouted.

“There!”

“Wha- hey, wait for me!”

Rice immediately sprinted to the direction he thinks he heard something almost leaving behind Geeves.

Geeves can only sigh inwardly at Rice’s behavior.

“Geez, I know you want to find the bear, but don’t be too excited about hearing the rustling of the leaves thinking the bear is there…”

Is what Geeves thought when they finally reached a small clearing in the forest where Rice suddenly stopped.

“Hey! I said wait up!......................eh?”

“You idiot! Do you have to shout!?”

Geeves eyes were wide. He was shocked by the fact that there is a bear and that the sound that Rice meant earlier was it’s breathing as it slept.

“He heard that!!!???”

When suddenly, a large shadow covered them, when they look up, the bear had already stood.

The bear had a size thrice that from an average male’s height, shiny black fur, bulky limbs that seemed fat yet firm as well.

Geeves’ and Rice’s face twitched as they look up.

“H-heeyyy….l-l-let’s t-talk about this yeah?”

For starters, Geeves wanted to end this peacefully

Needless to say, the bear didn’t respond, instead, it raised its humongous arm overhead and glared at the two of them.

*RRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!*

*BAM!*

The arm swung down towards the two and repelled them by roughly three meters back while leaving a dust cloud behind.

“D-damn, no choice for it. Geeves, let’s bolt!”

“T-tch! Fine!”

Since the blow from before just reduced both their HPs by 70% due to the STR difference, DEF difference, and having beginner armor, they had left with no choice but to run and think of a strategy.

+ + +

“Haah haah…..haah….”

“Damn….if that thing is a young bear…..just how big is a full grown one!?”

It was selfish to think that all of the animal mobs are based entirely on their real life counterparts. This is a game, so of course they will be different.

Though some aren’t, unfortunately for them, this one is.

The bear was too big for them to handle using their knowledge in real life. That’s why they need to disregard thinking that the animals here are the same as the animals in the real and start thinking of it as a [Monster].

“How are we going to deal with this, Rice?”

Geeves really has no idea how to tale on such a huge enemy.

“Well…first of all, we need new weapons…”

“Agreed. There’s no way these daggers will do any damage on that thing.”

Though they can just tell the guard that there is a bear, they wanted the higher reward, hence, they didn’t tell them about it and wanted to kill it themselves.

Not only that, they both refused to grind until both their levels are way higher that the [Young Bear] because they thought it was a cowardly way and that it would no longer be an adventure. They’re that stubborn.

With that in mind, they both went towards the town to buy better equipment.

Though, as they were still a [Novice], the weapon they can choose are very limited.

In the end, they chose a short sword as it has the highest damage. They didn’t plan to become a swordsman, but since they can’t choose they’re preferred weapons, they’re left to choose which has the highest damage over usability.

After which, they hunted slimes until they got used to they’re new weapons which leveled them up by 1.

They were still lower that the Lvl 10 [Young Bear] at Lvl 8 so it was still fine to grind, is what they convinced themselves.

Thinking that, they decided to face the bear again.

“Ack! Hey! Watch where you’re going to hit!”

“You too! Whaa- do you want to kill me!?”

The result, they were perfectly uncoordinated.

Before their lives were drained to 0, the two retreated again with sour emotions.

“Tch- I could’ve killed him if you were to pay more attention to your surroundings Geeves.”

“Hah? Oi, don’t blame others for your own mistakes! You’re the one that kept getting in the way!”

“Oh yeah!? Then why don’t we stop this and take that guy separately!”

“Fine! I don’t need you!”

Their teamwork was falling apart at a rapid rate. Like that, the two decided to separate.

10 minutes after.

The two of them failed miserably.

Though they both managed to retreat before dying, they still failed again and again and most likely reached the same conclusion.

“…”

“…”

However, even if they both know how to deal with it, actually saying it was really hard and awkward to do.

After much awkward silence in the air, Geeves finally decided to be the one to break the silence.

“…Hey…”

“…Hey…”

“…So you failed?...”

“…Yeah…you?”

“…Same…”

“…”

“…”
“pft- hahahahahahahahaha!”

“ku-hahahahahahahahahaha!”

After their awkward conversation, the two can’t help but laugh hard.

“Haha, look at us… fighting over something so stupid.”

“Haha, yeah….so….what do we do now?”

Rice asked Geeves this time.

“What else? That bear is going down!”

“You bet!”

And with that, their back to being friends.

In the first place, they didn’t really hate each other. Those thing they said before, most of them were directed to themselves.

They can’t help but feel weak and lonely that they’re the only ones that thought of that and were finding each other’s reason for being weak.

Well, making up is all good and all but they still have a problem.

“…How do we take him down?”

“…”

And the awkward silence was back again.

“First thing’s first…what do you do when confronting a huge enemy?”

“I dunno…shrink him?”

Geeves tried to give a joke to release the tension in the air. However, Rice approved of it instead of rebuking.

“That’s right! Why didn’t I think of that!?”

“Huh? No, wait…I was just joking Rice. How the hell are we supposed to shrink him!?”

Geeves felt weird of rebuking his own joke. However, he kept this weird feeling deep inside him and waited for Rice’s answer.

“We don’t shrink him, it’s just an expression. What we need to do is take away its footing!”

“Ohhh, so that’s what you mean…..wait…aren’t I a genius?”

“Drop it idiot. You were literally thinking of shrinking the bear. And you just said it was a joke.”

“W-whatever you may be talking about?”

Geeves, who tried to make a smart remark, broke in cold sweat as he avert his eyes from Rice who stated the truth.

Slightly sulking, he kept listening to their plan.

+ + +

“Then, let’s summarize our plan. I’ll slash the feet since I’m faster, after that you divert its attention to yourself by throwing rocks or whatever you can think of. Then finally, I’ll go for the kill.”

“Understood. I just hope it goes smoothly.”

“Hey, don’t jinx it!”

After Rice summarized the plan, Geeves nodded and they started to confront the bear again.

“Alright, there it is. I’ll start.”

With a short battle cry, Rice dashed for the bear’s legs.

Since it was too sudden, the bear was distracted and let him slash its right leg making him fall halfway.

The bear tried to launch an attack and raised its paw but was stopped by a rock hitting him.

When he looked at the direction where it came from, there was Geeves holding a number of rocks with one arm and one rock on his right hand.

Geeves continued to do this to distract him, in the meantime, Rice went for the other leg.

“Please hit!”

Rice shouted in his mind as he swung the short sword at the leg. However, reality refused to go easy on them.

*RRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!*

Enraged by the two’s annoying attacks, the bear pounded on the ground with both its arms which made the ground slightly shake. However, this was enough to make Rice lose his footing for a slight moment and made him miss the slash.

Not only him, Geeves tripped himself and fell down, thereby stopping the barrage of flying rocks heading towards the bear.

Taking this opportunity, the bear attacked Rice first as he was nearby.

Rice flew for more than 3 meters away and hit a nearby boulder which made it crack slightly as a result, and his HP was now down to around 20%.

“T-tch-”

The bear immediately followed through by smashing the now fallen Rice to kill him.

However, before it could deal the blow, Geeves had already stood up and attacked the bear from the side by stabbing it.

*RAAAHH!!*

The bear made a cry and his HP was now only 40% left. It turned around thinking of dealing with Geeves now instead of Rice.

Standing up, Rice slashed the other leg from behind which was their plan in the beginning. With both legs gone, the bear kneeled and can no longer move.

“Go! Hit him in the flank!”

“Uwoooohhh-!”

*bam!*

A dry sound could be heard as Geeves tackled the Lvl 10 [Young Bear] on its left side.

The bear staggered for a while due to the sudden impact. Using this opportunity, Rice stabbed the bear from the front and pushed it back.

Tripping as it fell backwards, the bear landed on a boulder behind him. As it couldn’t bear its weight, the boulder crumbled and filled a hole beside it which seemed to lead to a certain cave.

““Yes!!!””

The two players excitedly shouted as they had finally won against the bear that they kept losing to ever since they started playing.

Though they wondered why the boulder crumbled with just that, but actually, that boulder is where the bear constantly leans on and sometimes treated as a punching bag by the bear so it was already pretty much weakened.

Well, that resulted why the hole Lucas fell in being closed but the two of them didn’t know that but can’t help but worry that they did something wrong.

For a while, Geeves stared at his shaking hands feeling his excitement.

“Man, we were really lucky to be able to get one of these for free…I wonder about the rest?”

“Haha, if they also got one then it’s no longer a coincidence but fate, is it?”

They were both really thankful that they had gotten the [Portal] after finally feeling a sense of accomplishment.

“Maybe, haha. Well, let’s go grab and sell the drops so we can finally buy some armor.”

Not only that, but they finally reached Lvl 10 so now they can finally choose their jobs.

+ + +

Turns out that they received 20 Silvers for killing the bear, just an additional 10 Silvers from the reward without killing the bear. Well, because of that, they activated another quest and continued the Monster Extermination
chain quest.

Except for the fact that they finally died after being defeated by an [Alpha Wolf], though actually, they were overwhelmed by the teamwork of the [Wolves], there were no other interesting events happening as they continued to hunt the monsters.

As for their reward after completing the chain quest, they got 10 Gold, +500 Popularity in [Drachedge], the title [Monster Exterminator] which gives them +10% damage on monsters.

Slowly but steadily, they’re levels increased and they soon got tired of the monsters in the area.

Thinking that, they finally decided to start their journey.

By the way, it seems that from time to time, they were mistook as a couple as they walk through the streets what with Geeves’ feminine features and Rice’s cool looks, the road was always open when they walk. Needless to say, the two of them has no idea as for what reason. Though Rice has his suspicions, he refuses to believe it.

World Gate Online Chapter 9: Monster Extermination

Chapter 9: Monster Extermination

Turning time back, around the time when Lucas joined a party and went to hunt for the first time, a certain person has also just started playing.

Standing in the square plaza that Lucas was a few minutes ago were a player named [Rice].

He had silver hair and red iris, above his head was a wolf’s ear and behind him was a tail, the rest was humanlike. Why? Because he is a werebeast, to be more precise, he was half-human half-wolf.

First, let’s talk about the character selection. When creating the character, you choose a race that you want.
  • Human – they are normal, very normal, they have no special features whatsoever. They are mostly known for being adaptive.
  • Elf – they excel in magic and archery. If chosen, INT and DEX has an additional 10 points each no matter what the randomized stats are, so their max stat is actually 20 more than normal. Most of them tend to choose Magicians and Marksman.
  • Half-Elf – they are half-human half-elf. If chosen, INT and DEX has an additional 5 points each no matter what the randomized stats are.
  • Dwarf – they have good strength and excel in craftsmanship. If chosen, STR has 10 points increase no matter what the randomized stats are and has an additional stat [Craftsmanship] with a starting 50 points. Most Crafters or STR-dependent job are of this race.
  • Werebeast – they have good instinct, hearing, and sensing ability. If chosen, additional [Heighten Senses] passive skill. Fighter jobs are mostly Werebeasts for the skill.
  • Halfling – they are good with handling traps, whether dismantling or making them. If chosen, additional [Discovery] passive skill and [Dismantle] active skill. They are known for their innovations in tactics and traps and are mostly of the Scout type.
  • Orc – they are strong and buffed beings. If chosen, DEF and VIT have 10 points increase no matter what the randomized stats are. They are known for their endurance on taking hits and from their hideous appearance.
  • Elementals – they are special beings that control fire, water, earth, or wind. If chosen, [Fire Control], [Water Control], [Earth Control] or [Wind Control]  passive skill is added depending on the type they choose and can never learn a different attributed skill or wear different attributed equipments other than their chosen element. Not only that, but they will have very noticeable weakness and will cause severe damage. Because of this, there are very few of them in [World Gate Online].
    • Earth - Gnome
    • Air - Sylph
    • Water - Undine
    • Fire - Salamander

Now that the lecture is done, let’s talk about werebeasts.

After choosing the race, they are asked what half-animal they want to be. Rice chose wolf of course which explained his wolf-like appearance. But the type of wolf wasn’t decided by him.

What Rice is, is a [Silver Wolf].

Once chosen the type of animal, the system randomizes the type of that animal. And a [Silver Wolf] is a very very rare monster.

Normal wolves are dark grey, the lighter color they go, they more powerful they are. And a [Silver Wolf] is considered as the strongest in the wolf-type monsters. Of course, there are also special types of wolves which did not have the shade of grey but the [Silver Wolf] still tops them.

Looking at his own figure in the reflection of a building’s window, Rice can’t help grinning.

“Looks like I’m too lucky.”

First, he had won a [Portal] as one of the lucky 1000 people. Then he got an ultra-rare wolf-werebeast type. So of course he felt really lucky.

“Well then, for now let’s see my status. [Status Window]”

“Ohh, looks like I can become a Warrior with these, I was worried what I’ll do if my stats will be too far off from a Warrior.”

With that, he looked around first.

He had two objectives for looking around, one is to look for equipments, from the stands or from what others wore for future references. Two, is to look for comrades, someone to form a party with.

While he was looking, he noticed that most of the players are checking him out and most of them were females. Since his type is rare after all and somewhat attractive or cute to some. Not only that, he was already a pretty boy even in the real world so, coupled with the wolf ears and tails, he was most likely one of the handsome avatars in the game.

“Fufu, I’m a sinful man.”

He kept his cool appearance on the outside and was grinning wide on the inside.

But then, he noticed that the players’ attraction was suddenly diverted.

Following the players’ gazes, he saw a woman at the end. The woman had black short hair, limbs that seemed fragile and fierce eyes that looked like it’s looking for a prey. She was at Rice’s shoulder height and with her flat
chest, she looked like the boyish type of girl which attracted both men and women from around her as a ‘Cool Beauty’ type.

“Her face seems to resemble someone...but whom...?”

Thinking this, Rice was the first person to walk towards her.

Seeming to have noticed him, the girl looked at him.

“Hey there, do you want to form a party with me? Since we both just started playing, I think it will be helpful to help each other out.”

Rice remained calm and offered to form a party in order to get to know her more since asking her name since too sudden after all.

“Well…alright then. The name’s Geeves”

Geeves extended her hand to Rice, seems like she wanted to introduce herself before forming a party.

“…What kind of girl has a name of Geeves?”

Rice shook his head thinking that it doesn’t matter anyway and shook her hand as he introduces himself.

“My name’s Rice. It’s nice to meet you Geeves.”

To this, for some reason, Geeves had wide eyes and his mouth agape.

No matter how you look at her, she was surprised for some reason. Rice tilted his head to this and asked.

“Is something wrong?”

“That…Rice…no way. Could it be that you’re….Kanin? Kanin Fried?”

“Eh?”

This time, it was Rice who displayed a shocked expression.

It’s only natural of course, since that was his real name after all. For someone in game to know his name in the real means that she was someone who knew him in the real world but he can’t think of anyone.

“That…is my name but…who’re you?”

“I knew it! It’s me, Gavin! Gavin Fastmark!”

“EEEEEEEEEEHHHHHH!!!!!!???????????”

Actually, now that he mention it, he finally knew why he resembled someone he knew, but since he kept thinking that she’s a she, he missed out the fact the Gavin, was actually mistaken as a girl sometimes in the real. But Gavin’s a he.

To this, Rice was horrified. Horrified from the fact that he almost fell in love with a male.

“D-damn! I can’t believe I forgot how much of a trap Gavin is!!! I almost crossed a road that is never meant to be crossed!”

Rice clenched his heart and was sweating heavily.

Geeves tilted his head as to why he was panting heavily but didn’t bother to ask.

By the way, the reason why Geeves was able to know Rice’s true identity, it’s actually pretty simple…well, for Filipinos anyway since the English translation of Kanin is Rice.

“Anyway Rice, it’s good to see that you have a [Portal]. I thought you can’t afford one?”

“Hn? Ah, yes…I actually won it in the lottery. I take it that you did too?”

Geeves’ change of topic finally managed to snap Rice back from reality.

“Yeah! I can’t believe we both manage to get one! Talk about fate man!”

With that, the ‘Cool Beauty’ type before was completely destroyed with Geeves’ loud voice.

To others, it might look like she, actually a he, was a sunny type instead. But to those who knew him, it was just his loud tone like always.

“Anyways, Party! Come on! Let’s go grind some monsters!”

“Alright alright, geez, calm down a bit won’t you?”

Rice sent a party request as well as a friend request.

With Geeves’ acceptance, they first went around the town in order to familiarize themselves more.

Then finally, they decided it’s time to hunt. Even though they weren’t able to see the whole town, they decided that it can wait so they went to grind for now and left for the east gate.

Reaching the east gate, they met the NPC guards and for some reason, Geeves talked to them.

“Hey, you guys doing ok there?”

“Ah, yes. Is there something you need?”

The guard was a bit surprised since he didn’t expect that he’ll suddenly be talked to.

“Nothing really, just wondering whether you guys get bored standing here the whole time.”

“Ah, well it does get pretty boring. But still, by remembering that we are entrusted to guard this gate from enemies no matter what. It is what kept us from fighting the boredom.”

The guards looked proud as one of them said that.

“Enemies huh, speaking of which, we’re off to defeat a few monsters and come back later so ‘till then.”

As Geeves was about to head out waving to his back, the guard suddenly said something that caught their attention.

“Oh, in that case, do you mind listening to our request?”

“Request?”

“C-could this be…a quest! And I was just wondering why Geeves unreasonably talked to the guard…so he was aiming for this huh?”

Rice was amazed to learn that quests are triggered this way in this game.

Of course, since this is not a game that is displayed in the screen, there won’t be any [?] on top of a person’s head displaying they give out quests.

You actually have to interact to them, say the right lines in order to trigger it.

“I guess I’ve been thinking of Geeves wrongly all this years.”

“W-wow, hey Rice, I think I just triggered a quest! I can’t believe it!”

“So it wasn’t intentional!? Give me back my compliment!”

Rice tsukkomied when Geeves revealed that the whole thing was an accident.

“In the end Geeves can only be Geeves”

Rice sighed inwardly at Geeves who was tilting his head still clueless.

“There is a village nearby outside the wall that is being troubled by monsters. Though the monsters may be weak and the guards can usually take care of it, it is still best to help them as you hunt.”

Do you want to accept the quest?
YESNO

“Yes!”

Geeves immediately accepted the quest instead of consulting with Rice first which made Rice’s cheek twitch.

“W-what are you accepting it immediately for idiot! Why didn’t you ask me first?”

“Are you gonna decline?”

This cool voice coupled with Geeves’ cool glance that seemed to stare deeply in your soul made Rice step back a little.

“N-no…anyway, at least ask for my opinion first next time!”

“Suuure~”

Geeves’s attitude immediately did a complete 180 degrees after getting Rice’s confirmation and went back to his easy-going mood.

“Geez, this guy…I guess he’s the type that can be count on at the moment of need…still, is there a need to give me that cold look?”

Again, Rice can only sigh at Geeves’ unpredictable attitude.

Monster Extermination
The town guards have asked for your help in defeating the neighboring villages’ monsters.

Requirement: Eliminate 10 [Blue Slimes], 10 [Red Slimes]
Time Limit: N/A
Difficulty: F
Reward: 2 Silvers

“Oh, looks like it’s just slimes.”

“See? What were you getting so worried about?”

“Yeah yeah, but 2 Silvers huh…”

Rice muttered as he looks at the reward.

For beginners, they were given 1 Gold, 20 Silvers, and 30 Coppers.

1 Gold is equivalent to 100 Silvers.

1 Silver is equivalent to 100 Coppers.

Rice had wanted to know how the prices work in this world so he won’t get careless and buy expensive items with poor qualities. So he had to know how hard it is to earn money, then look around the shops later and estimate their value.

So with just 20 slimes, they can get 2 Silvers. That means 1 Silver is about 10 slimes worth of hunting.

“Hmm, I guess we weren’t given that much of starting money huh?”

Aside from being a pain in the neck, earning 20 Silvers shouldn’t be that hard. By that conclusion, the good weapons and item’s prices would probably in the Golds and normal weapons or items as well as consumable items are either in Silvers or Coppers.

Well, if it’s only earning 20 Silvers then it’s still fine. But 100 Silvers to get 1 Gold? Rice can only sigh on how hard it’s most likely to be to get money.

“Well, we’re still a Lvl 1. The stronger we get, the harder the monsters, the bigger the pay. Let’s just think of that.”

“Where’s this village at?”

Geeves asked the guards hoping to start soon.

“Yes, once you exit this east gate, just follow this path leading north. If you follow the path, you’ll be able to see the village soon. Also, you can get the reward from any of the guards stationed there.”

“Gotcha, we’ll be going then.”

With that, Geeves and Rice began their journey.

By the way, Geeves' current status is this.

“Well, that was rather quick.”

“Yeah, though I was getting worried when slicing attacks won’t work, simple punches and kicks would do it anyway.”

After defeating the required number of slimes and then some, Geeves and Rice approached a guard in order to get their reward.

“Ah yes, thank you for your time. Here’s the reward as promised.”

“Thanks.”

After receiving the reward, they had planned to go back in town to search for another quest with a higher pay when the guard continued his words.

To trigger another quest after finishing a quest is what a chain quest is.

Chain quests usually have some kind of story in it. That’s why it was explainable as to why the both of them were surprised to be able to activate a chain quest with only monster extermination.

“C-calm down Geeves, this might end after this one so it’s too early to make an assumption.”

“Either way, we have to try!”

The two accepted the quest hoping something good will happen in the end.

This time, they were asked to find [Young Bear] in the [Pliht Forest] that is a few minutes’ walk north of the village, on the quest that labeled [Monster Extermination II].

The rewards this time were 10 Silvers. And if the [Young Bear] is to be eliminated, the reward will be more, or so they were told. Quite the escalation from the 2 Silvers before with the slimes. Just goes to show how dangerous this quest might be for them.

Though they had both acquired the skill [Bash] after leveling up to 5 as well as [Punch] and [Kick] from repetitive  action, since they know nothing about the enemy, they can’t help but be nervous about it.

Also, [Wolves] is different from slimes in many ways. First of all, its appearance, the slimes actually look cute with their jelly-like substance that kept wriggling so it wasn’t that hard to confront it. [Wolves] however, look like actual wolves. Vicious, strong, and fierce. The way they growl deeply and their stares that overflows with killing intent, it’s not surprising one would get scared just looking at them.

But there are times where you must face your own fear for the sake of something. Be it for your loved ones, your family, your friends, your pride, your goal, or in their case…money.

“Alright, let’s restock our potions first before hunting.”

“Can’t wait for it! For the sake of making more money!”

Finished buying potions, the two of them went to find the [Young Bear].

“It’s all good and all but…how the hell are we supposed to find a bear…wait, do bears even appear here?”

Not even five minutes after they sent off, Geeves was already complaining.

It’s true though, in the [Pliht Forest], the only monsters supposedly found are plant-like monsters that can’t move as well as slimes and is actually a forest that is more popular from the many herbs you can harvest here. This is why the villagers can safely walk in and out to get the herbs needed.

Until some claim of a bear residing in it. They had of course asked the village guards to take care of it, however, every time they sent out, they can never find them so the bear sighting was deemed as nothing but a rumor.

However, the villagers that claimed to see them was still uneasy on entering the forest again, as a result, the village’s stock of herbs was declining.

Also, the [Pliht Forest] has a neighboring forest called the [Sleolst Forest] where Lucas and his party entered from the north gate walking east. After discovering the Lvl 60 boss [Blood Werewolf], Lucas kept running and running that he didn’t notice he had already entered a different forest and fell.

“Well, you’re the one who said that it won’t hurt to try so shut up and look around.”

“Boooo”

Walking for another 10 minutes, they finally saw an anomaly.

After walking for a while, just when Geeves was about to get bored again, Rice felt something. To be precise, he heard something.

“Haaah, there’s still no sign of mgh-!?”

“Shhh! I can hear something…”

Because Geeves was too noisy, Rice forced his hand on Geeves’ mouth to shut him up and closed his eyes to focus and search the sound he heard.

………………………………………..*suuuu*

“There!”

“Wha- hey, wait for me!”

Having located the direction of the sound, Rice immediately ran towards it ignoring Geeves as he can’t lose this chance.

Finally reaching a small clearing in the forest, there, a bear was resting in the middle of it. And the sound he heard came from none other than the bear’s breathing.

“Hey! I said wait up!......................eh?”

“You idiot! Do you have to shout!?”

A large shadow covered them, when they look up, the bear had already stood.

The bear had a size thrice that from an average male’s height, shiny black fur, bulky limbs that seemed fat yet firm as well.

Geeves’ and Rice’s face twitched as they look up.

“H-heeyyy….l-l-let’s t-talk about this yeah?”

Geeves tried to talk it out.

World Gate Online Chapter 8: Rewards

Chapter 8: Rewards

“Aaaah!”

“Hey! Somebody stop this guy!”

“We’re gonna get caught up as well!!!”

“Run for it!”

Lucas woke up hearing bustling noises from all around him.

When he tried to get up to see what it was, a pang of pain headache hit him so he wanted to rub his forehead. That’s when he noticed it, his right arm was there.

He furthered inspected his body, right hand…check, left foot…check, left hand……left hand….

“M-my left hand…..”

No matter where he looked, he could no longer see his left hand. This confirmed it, he was still in the game.

He then noticed his surroundings, he was in a familiar room, this was the room Sebastian had offered him before, which meant he was in his house.

Getting out of bed despite the renewed balance of regaining his left foot, he went out of the house to see what the ruckus was all about earlier.

“Get out of my way! Or I won’t hesitate to burn you as well!”

“Please wait for a second Master Denneth, we still have to question these fools before killing them.”

Lucas saw a familiar black dragon standing majestically in the center of the village and Sebastian facing each other, what’s more, he saw robbed figures behind Sebastian tied in chains that glowed blue slightly.

“Excuse me, what is this all about?”

“Ah, Lucas. So you’ve finally awoken.”

“Boy…fine, we’ll talk first. But I get to kill them.”

Noticing Lucas, both Sebastian and Denneth calmed down. At first, Lucas was wary of Denneth but it seems it was unnecessary.

He walked further closer to them as he stares at the robbed figures, they all wore the same robes with a familiar eye logo on the back feeling that he had saw them before somewhere.

“Ah yes, these guys are the demi-vampires that were supposed to…kidnap my daughter.”

“Oh…so I see…”

“Boy, how are you feeling?”

Denneth moved his head closer asking Lucas.

He was still not used to talking to a real dragon so Lucas was a bit hesitant.

“Well…aside from my left hand, I feel fine.”

“…I’m sorry Lucas, when we were retreating, I only managed to retrieve your right arm and left foot…your left hand is already burned so….”

“I am also sorry for that.”

“N-no it’s fine, it was my weak hand anyway.”

Perhaps only now noticing that he’s being called Lucas by Sebastian, or because the leader of the pure blooded vampires and a dragon is bowing in front of him, Lucas was a bit nervous as he answered.

“So…what exactly happened after I was unconscious?”

Sebastian and Denneth looked at each other first then started their story.

“When we were…counting our losses as we retreated, Denneth here came to our village.”

They were cautious at first and kept their guard up until Denneth spoke. Denneth told them how he was being controlled from the inside and spat the demi-vampire and Lucas out. After seeing Lucas, Sebastian immediately ordered to connect his limbs before it was too late. As for the demi-vampire, since he was already dead, they stripped him off his equipment and burned the corpse.

After that, Denneth explained his circumstances and Sebastian and the other vampires listened closely. But then another problem showed up, the demi-vampires that were supposed to take Lilith to sell came to the cave.

They found out that the dragon had been freed of their control and immediately tried to retreat only to be easily captured by Sebastian and the others. It’s not because the demi-vampires are weak, normally 10 demi-vampires would still stand a chance against them but with the help of Denneth, they were no problem. They used the [Anti-magic Chain] the demi-vampires had in order to tie them up and make it so they can’t use magic. It seems slaves also have this kind of equipment in the form of a collar, to prevent them from being trouble to the owners.

The actual problem is Denneth. He wanted to immediately burn the demi-vampires leaving no ash behind because of his hatred towards them. Meanwhile, Sebastian wanted to interrogate the demi-vampires first which lead to the current situation.

“I see…I think interrogating them first is more efficient uhm…Master…Denneth?”

“Just call me Denneth boy, there’s no need for honorifics to the human that saved me from my predicament.”

“Denneth then, please think about it, if you kill them now, we won’t be able to know where their base is. If you want to offer them your wrath, then burning a whole city of demi-vampires is easier than killing them one by one no?”

To be honest, Lucas was not used to adding honorifics to someone, so he was really grateful that he won’t need to. Though he knew that there are times which he must, he still didn’t want to do so.

“I…know…I apologize, my anger got the better of me.”

“I-it’s fine, as long as you calmed down.”

Still not used to having a dragon bow his head before him, Lucas waved his hands…or rather, hand in front of him implying that he didn’t mind it at all.

With that finally settled, they turn towards the demi-vampires tied up with the [Anti-magic Chain] which glowed blue slightly.

“Now then…what to do with you guys…”

“First, tell us where the rest of you scums are.”

Sebastian grabbed one of the demi-vampires by the collar making his hood fall off revealing his face. The one from before also wore a hood until the end, and Lucas wasn’t able to focus on how the demi-vampire actually looked like because of the pain in his head.

Now that he took a good look at it, the demi-vampire’s skin is different from the pure-blooded vampires. Pure-blooded vampires had a pale face as white as snow, with their alluring eyes that varied color and shiny hair that seemed to glow in the dark, they were very beautiful. The demi-vampires though, are nowhere near it, instead, they look more like monsters. With pale blue skin full of wrinkles all throughout their body. Their beady eyes looked like that of a lizard’s, yellow and vertical pupils that seemed to glow.

Even through that, because a demi-vampire is an offspring of a pure-blooded vampire and a different race, some had animal ears, tails and extra furs. Some were as short as a Halfling or a dwarf, some had the pointed ears of an elf and many more.

“So that’s why they wear hoods…”

Looking at them made his head ache, remembering the pain he felt from before.

“…Boy, there’s no need for you to listen through this. You can rest if you want.”

Seeing Lucas press his hand on his temple in pain, Denneth understood and offered for him to take a rest. He knows how hard it must be for him to face the demi-vampires again resisting the urge to kill them because he is also experiencing it right now.

“Thanks, but it’s fine. If I can’t handle this much, then my future would be rather troubling.”

Lucas knew that he has to resist this. If he doesn’t overcome this hurdle now then he will never be able to. In order to free himself from his fears, he has to face them head on. It was the same that time with Denneth.

He feared him, that’s why he faced him. That was all there is to it.

Sebastian, still in the middle of his interrogation, was still unable to get any answers from the demi-vampire.

“Heh! It’s no use asking us for these troublesome things, you’re all going to die anyway.”

The demi-vampire which seemed to be a half human that Sebastian was holding laughed and so did the others still sitting on the floor.

“You will be the one dying if you don’t answer me.”

Sebastian’s eyes glowed red and the air around him changed.

It was a skill called [Terror Stare]. It instills the opponent’s greatest fears into them, a nightmare so to say. But to them, it is all reality, if used to a player, the consequences could be deadly, worst case, they may even fall into a comma. Fortunately, players have only met demi-vampires so far. That does not mean that all pure-blooded vampires can use this skill, this is a skill limited only to the vampire lord.

“A-aah…noo….stop…….NOOO!!! GET AWAY FROM ME!!! NO PLEASE! I-I’ll tell you! J-just stop this…..please………I’ll talk…..just….stop it….”

The demi-vampire’s face twisted into fear and tears started to flow, they didn’t know what kind of ‘fear’ did he see but it could not be great for him to break down like that.

Then and there, Lucas swore to himself not to get on Sebastian’s bad side. Ever.

“I’ll repeat, where is the demi-vampire’s base?”

“I-it’s at-!”

The demi-vampire convulsed. His face swelled up and his body distorted.

“He-hey! Watch out!”

Sensing something bad about to happen, Lucas grabbed Sebastian and kicked the demi-vampire away. Moments after, the demi-vampire exploded and splattered blood everywhere.

“That’s….did it trigger when he’s about to reveal confidential information?”

“A safety?...To think that they had such a system.”

The other demi-vampires paled as they heard their conversation, it would seem that even they didn’t know of such a system.

“It seems asking the others would be meaningless. Let me burn them already.”

“Haa, fine.”

Sebastian and Lucas stepped away.

“N-no wai- AAHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!”

One demi-vampire tried to plea for help but was immediately cut off by his own scream of pain.

Denneth had released a black flame that burned everything. With the sound of crackling fire, Lucas and Sebastian walked towards Denneth to continue their business.

“Well…that didn’t turn out as planned. However Lucas, you are still yet to be rewarded.”

“It’s finally here!”

Completing his very first quest, Lucas was excited of receiving his first rewards.

Sebastian motioned his men to get something inside his house. After the men had returned, Sebastian presented it to Lucas. It was a familiar black sword with a red gem embedded on it.

This is without a doubt, the sword Sebastian had lent him before the battle. The Draughtbane.

“Before, I only intend to lend it to you…but you have proven yourself worthy of wielding it, please, let this sword accompany you in your travels.”

Lucas held the sword in his hands, he felt familiar with it and can only stare at it deeply.

NameDraughtbaneRankS

Sebastian’s acknowledgement
DescriptionA royal heirloom of the pure blooded vampire clan. This sword has the ability to drain the enemy’s life and pass it to the user for every slash. The amount of life taken will differ depending on how powerful the slash is.

Lucas had wondered why he was able to equip it now that it was no longer borrowed but it seems there was nothing to worry about since he met the requirements.

“As our village isn’t as rich as it used to be, I’m afraid I can only give you this much…if possible, I would give you a lot more but…”

“I-it’s fine, this is already more than enough for me who has no weapon.”

“Then, at least let us prepare you armor as well.”

Sebastian offered him another reward.

“Before, you were asking where you can buy armors but…since money has no value here, the answer was that there are none. But, we can still prepare you light armor from the leathers you gathered before, there was no need to pay in the first place.”

Now that you mention it…

Being told of this now, Lucas regretted not asking before. His mind was set on the fact that you will always need money to get what you need since this is a game in the first place. Lucas had forgotten how flexible the NPC’s can be here and so he didn’t think of requesting an armor to be made instead of buying.

“T-that, I would be most grateful for it.”

A bit embarrassed, Lucas still managed to thank Sebastian for it.

“Now it’s time for my rewards boy.”

“Eh?”

Lucas was surprised that Denneth will also give him a reward.

He had thought that Sebastian will be the only one giving the rewards since he was the one that gave the quest. And, as far as he can remember, he didn’t get a quest from Denneth.

“This is…an apology for your arm and also a thank you for saving me from that infernal magic.”

Denneth held his gigantic left arm and pulled it off!

“Wha- he-hey!”

Ignoring the bleeding of his left arm, Denneth presented his own left arm to Lucas.

“Show me your left arm boy.”

A bit hesitant, Lucas complied and showed his severed left hand to Denneth.

Denneth blew a concentrated black flame in between his own left arm and Lucas’ making him jump back to avoid it but was stopped by something unknown inside of him.

For some reason, Lucas felt that the flame wouldn’t hurt him and didn’t evade. True enough, his HP didn’t drop a single digit even with the flame engulfing his left arm.

Soon, the dragon arm shrank to a size of a normal human’s arm, more precisely, to a size of Lucas’ own arm. When the black flame disappeared, he found his own left arm completely black. There were no claws and such, it only looked like a normal human’s arm clad in black.

Not only that, when pinched, there was no difference to human skin. Just when Lucas was wondering what happened, a familiar window appeared.

“T-this is…”

While Denneth healed his now severed left arm, he continued to explain to Lucas.

“That is my own arm, it is my fault you left arm burned and was unable to be recovered”

“But…you were being controlled…”

“Even more so. It was my fault to be carelessly controlled in the first place. I cannot forgive myself no matter what.”

Denneth stood proudly. This is a real dragon, noble, fearless, and proud.

Lucas was at awe as he continued to stare at the existence before him.

“Now then, that was the apology part, next is the reward boy. I see that you’ve maxed out [Night Vision], let me replace that with a greater skill.”

Denneth blew another black flame to Lucas which engulfed his whole body.

[Night Vision] has been removed.

“Thank you…I really don’t know what to say…”

Lucas bowed to Denneth implying his gratitude sincerely.

“No, I should be the one thanking you boy.”

No matter how many times he sees it, Lucas can’t get used to see a large dragon lowering his head for him.

Lucas opted to change the topic before everyone present starts to bow at him.

“S-so umm, now that you’re free…what are your plans?”

“As atonement for…the things I did to these pure-blooded vampires…I was thinking of guarding them, in case the demi-vampires were to come back but...”

There he goes with the atonement again.

Just when Lucas was about to say something to him, Denneth continued his words.

“I think it will be more efficient if I go out and destroy these infernal vampires myself. My wrath has just begun!”

“W-wait…”

“What is it now boy? I’ll let you know that even though I owe you my life, there’s nothing you can do to change my mind on this. I’ll make sure those vermins feel my wrath!”

It seemed Denneth was completely set on this.

Lucas thought that this would be a bad situation if Denneth were to leave. More specifically, it would be more problematic to Lucas.

Why? Because he knows that the demi-vampires will know something is wrong when their men that were supposed to get the princess didn’t return and will attack the pure-blooded vampires and will definitely win once again.

Not only that, these demi-vampires had already managed to control Denneth once, who’s to say it won’t happen again? If Denneth were to go, history will only repeat itself and Lucas’ efforts will be gone. He didn’t particularly mind it since he already got the quest and finished it but Lucas had already grown somewhat attached to them, and thinking that they will go back to the situation before is…

“Unforgivable…”

Though in games, quests are supposed to be repeated in order for another player to activate it as well and this is probably what is supposed to happen but still, Lucas can’t let that happen.

In order to stop this, there are two ways. One, to make sure Denneth will stay in this place and guard it. Two, let Denneth go and rampage while Lucas stays and do the guarding.

As for why Lucas won’t choose option two, first of all, because he didn’t want to stay in this cave for eternity. Even if he’s attached to them, he still wants to go on an adventure since this was the purpose of the game in the beginning. Second, because he is still weak, with no jobs at all. No skills, no items. He doesn’t think he can take on an army of demi-vampires by himself in his current state.

So the only option is to make Denneth stay.

“You have to understand, you must stay here Denneth.”

“Like I said boy. I won’t change my mind.”

Denneth released a powerful glare at Lucas making him want to shrink in fear. However, Lucas has already willed himself for this and glared back.

Seeing this, Sebastian can’t help but intervene.

“I-it’s fine Lucas, we’ll somehow manage on our own.”

“No, we all know that won’t lead to a good result.”

“Then what do you suggest boy! My patience can only go so far!”

“Let me do it.”

The whole area went silent.

The vampire onlookers had wide-eye that displayed they can’t believe what they just heard. Not only was them, even Sebastian and Denneth shocked.

“Boy…what are you saying!?”

“Lucas…as I thought, you really must not do this for us!”

Despite Sebastian’s plea to stop, Lucas only displayed his resolute eyes that showed he won’t back down coupled with a confident smile.

“Denneth…let me carry your wrath.”

With that one sentence, the atmosphere was once brought to silence.

Soon after, the one who broke it was the large black dragon standing majestically in the middle.

“Kuku…haha…HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!”

The dragon’s laugh echoed inside the cave.

Everyone was dumbfounded to hear the dragon laugh, even Lucas who was completely serious was taken aback when suddenly laughed at.

“Hahahaha, fine boy! You win! I’ll stay here and guard this place as atonement and forget my revenge.”

“Though I don’t understand the need to laugh…well whatever, it’s good to see you understand.”

Lucas pouted at first, then revealed a wry smile at the end.

With this, Denneth will stay and Lucas will be able to go out.

“Another dragon race skill…somehow, I’m slowly turning into a dragon aren’t I? In fact, am I still human?”

Lucas tilted his head to the side while thinking of casual thoughts.

Well, he was still grateful for it and thanked Denneth once again. Next, he turned to Sebastian.

“About the armor, when can I get it?”

“Well…the armor can be finished this evening but…are you planning to leave immediately?”

Sebastian looked somewhat lonely when he asked that question.

Maybe like Lucas, he also has grown attached to him and didn’t want to part soon.

“…No…I’m thinking of gaining information of the outside first by asking Denneth some questions, dragons are known for their high intelligence right? So…that…I’ll be troubling you for a few more days…”

Well, since it would be awkward to only leave just because the quest is done, Lucas wanted to stay a few more days in the village and learn things from Denneth.

Information is always important. Lucas just realized he still know nothing of this world.

Who was behind the demi-vampires?

What exactly is the reason behind the vampires’ conflict?

When had this world actually existed?

Where are the rest of the dragons?

Why is there a need to make this quest story in the first place?

How come the NPCs are this flexible in conversations?

There was so much to know. More importantly, there’s still the [World Key] which can mysteriously travel to the real world and apparently, to other worlds.

“Well…let’s take this one step at a time…”

Lucas sighed and with that, he finally logged out.

+ + +

[Denneth…let me carry your wrath]

When Lucas uttered this words, not only were the dragon and the vampires the one frozen in shock, the people watching them had also been dumbfounded and can only stare in amazement.

Each and every one of them had only one thing in their mind.

“““This will definitely trigger another quest!”””

And sure enough, they were right but what was showed was something they never had thought.

“An S class quest!!! To encounter an S class quest in such an early time, I can only say as expected of Lucas!”

Pearce exclaimed as he saw the quest Lucas received through the person in charge of managing the quests.

As far as they all know, there has only been 2 such quests that is of S class including the one Lucas had.

But the other one, is someone that can be called the strongest player in [World Gate Online], that person is stronger than Lucas both in level and in skills. Well, that’s what the numbers show anyway.

As for who that is and what the quest was, that will be another story. And for whether they will meet, one can only anticipate what will happen in that situation.

“Not only that…but that [Denneth’s Arm]…I can’t believe such a thing can exist…for a dragon to give an arm to a human….”

Trask showed interest on the dragon arm Lucas was given. It’s only natural since he didn’t, or rather, no one knew that transplant can exist in the game also.

Some solve their lost limb problem by going to an NPC that specialized in making prosthetic limbs. They all thought that that is the only way to replace their lost limb. Well, turns out they’re wrong.

After Lucas logged out, the feed had stopped.

Since they had been fast forwarding the useless conversations and such, they were only several minutes late of the actual time.

“Sir, there’s a phone call for you.”

An employee presented a phone with an excited expression.

“A phone call, who is it?”

“It’s Lucas.”

Ever one in the room was surprised to hear the news. Since they had been watching him from the start, he’s already become somewhat of a celebrity in the building. This explained why several of them looked like they wanted to snatch the phone but kept still because of the fact that Trask is still their boss.

Noticing this, Trask can’t help but show a wry smile.

“Yes hello? Lucas, is it alright to put you on speaker phone?...thank you.”

Everyone was surprised, sure they all want to hear what Lucas wanted to say for him to call right after logging out and will definitely be asking questions after their conversation is over, but they can still restrain themselves if the Trask forbids it so for him to put him on speaker phone now, it seems they worried for nothing.

Trask only displayed a smile and clicked the speaker phone option.

“Alright, what is it that made you call, Lucas? By the way, I think congratulates are in order for completing the quest, I must admit, I held my doubts but…it seems I was wrong.”

[[Ah y-yes, thank you. I also didn’t expect to have reached such an ending myself. Anyway…I know I already signed the contract and all but, is it alright to add another request?]]

“Sure, fire away”

[[Is it possible not to show the rewards I got?]]

“Well, sure, I can arrange for that, but…can you tell me why?”

Trask was curious as to why Lucas refuses to let others know of his rewards which he can boast in the future.

[[Well, remember that I asked you to keep my name unknown right? Well, since I got very rare items…I think they will still recognize me if they saw my items…I really don’t want to run into more troublesome events anymore…]]

“Ah, haha, I see…Alright, will that be all?”

[[Well, it seems that my name has been said by others here and there during my time in there…can you also omit that?]]

“Yes, I was to do that anyway in the first place.”

[[Thanks, lastly, is it alright to cut the video feed now? Since, I don’t think you’ll need the rest for the movie anyway.]]

“Ah yes yes, that would be best. Since I don’t think my employees will start working with the video still on. They had become quite the fan of yours you know.”

Just as Trask mentioned, the employees had already grown attached to Lucas.

“Lucas! Good work out there!”

“You were so cool Lucas!!!”

“Let’s party sometime Lucas!”

“Lucas! Let’s meet sometime in the game!”

“Lucas! Please marry me!”

The audience cheered for Lucas who was on the other end of the phone.

[[T-that is, thank you very much for your support…I guess? I would be happy to party with you sometime…but for now, I think I need to find a way back first.]]

Lucas’ voice was filled with embarrassment. Since Lucas wasn’t the type of person who normally received such comments before, he didn’t know how to react to them and can only thank them.

[[Well…I need to go now because of school.]]

“Yes, goodbye Lucas.”

And with that, the line was cut and the theater was filled in a calm silence for a while.

“Well, what are you guys waiting for? There’s still work to do!”

“““Yes!”””

+ + +

“Haaah…I really can’t get used to this…”

Lucas sighed after hanging up the phone.

“…I think there was someone that even said ‘Please marry me’…nah, I’m probably imagining it.”

Lucas shook his head and stopped thinking of useless things. Right now, he has more problems.

He’s going to be late.

Because of fainting numerous times, he had already lost track of time.

After wearing his clothes for school, Lucas went out of his condo and started to make his way to school

Since he had already missed majority of the first period, he decided to cut classes and just wait for the second period in the cafeteria, since he hadn’t eaten breakfast yet.

There, he met Gavin and his friends which were also eating breakfast.

“Hm? Is that Lucas? I thought you had class today?”

“Yeah well, I was late so I decided to skip.”

Looking tired, Lucas sat on their table after ordering his food.

“Did I just hear what I think I just hear!?”

“Lucas skipped!!!”

“Welcome to the dark side bro!”

“W-what the hell you guys, this is the part where you’re supposed to say ‘Don’t be late next time’! Why are you actually encouraging me!?”

Lucas was surprised to receive praises from skipping classes, well, this is the kind of guys they are so maybe it’s as expected?

“Haha, this is the first time you were late you know? What were you doing?”

“Nothing…just stayed up late last night…”

Lucas averted his eyes and focused on eating.

Seeing this Gavin can’t help but be more curious.

“Suspicious, totally suspicious….unless…..ahhhh, I see, I see, our Lucas had grown already. Yes, yes, it’s alright Lucas, just keep in mind to be responsible when the time comes.”

For some reason, Gavin seemed to have come into conclusion and patted his back.

Seeming to have noticed what Gavin meant, the rest also gave Lucas a pat in the back as well as a thumb’s up.

“…What’s wrong with you guys?”

Well, Lucas was the only one oblivious of the matter and can only tilt his head.

“Anyway, I just checked the site, look, there’s a new video uploaded in the Hall of Fame, and it was uploaded by the company itself!”

Changing the topic, Kanin showed his laptop to everybody which displayed the Hall of Fame page of the official site of [World Gate Online].

Though only Gavin and Kanin were the ones playing, plus Lucas, everyone was still curious and wanted to watch it excitedly.

Except for one person who paled after seeing the title of the video.

World Gate Online Chapter 7: Dragon’s Wrath

Chapter 7: Dragon’s Wrath

“…Ah, there it is…”

Pearce muttered after seeing Lucas get eaten by the dragon with a tired expression.

It wasn’t just him that looked tired, Lilianne and the other employees all sighed at the outcome. Though they had predicted this outcome from the beginning, actually seeing it happen was more tiresome than they thought.

They had been watching the battle between Lucas and Denneth from the start. They had saw Lucas coming up with a tactic he thought suitable for the moment and saw him attack the dragon successfully with it on the first half.

However, after the breath attack, the audience can only look at Lucas with pity as they saw him cry from the death of his comrades and gritted his teeth. They all know well how high Lucas’ [Night Vision] would allow him to see through that fire and some of them teared up on that scene like Pearce. Since the vampire army was still shaken by fear, Lucas had attacked the dragon alone.

Instead of the vampires running away, they had helped Lucas despite still being afraid of Denneth.

The audience watched this with soft eyes when Sebastian had held out his hand to Lucas.

But alas, that instant of soft mood was soon broken.

With a shockwave from the dragon, the entire vampire army plus Lucas was blown away. Sebastian, who was the nearest to the dragon was about to get eaten. The audience looked at this closely in suspense, those that couldn’t handle it turned around and shut their eyes, not wanting to see it.

Then, all of a sudden, Lucas sliced off his leg that was caught in a huge boulder and ran towards Sebastian in full speed.

Replacing him as he pushed Sebastian away, Lucas was eaten instead. His outreached arms were outside of the mouth so the bite sliced through it.

Those who had only teared up before were now crying. Honestly, it was ridiculous to cry on such a scene as they know in their minds that Lucas would revive and the vampires were just NPCs. But, to those that thought of that, they can’t bring themselves to say it. The battle was real, the drama, the tragedy, the friendship. Everything felt so real that they can’t just say something like that.

[[No! Milord!]]

[[Let go of me! He just sacrificed himself from me! How can I not take revenge!!!???]]

They were watching Sebastian being hold of by the vampire general.

Even with Lucas defeated, the story went on.

The vampire general pleaded as he held back Sebastian.

[[…I understand…I understand but…………]]

[[Milord….]]

For a while, Sebastian stopped his outburst, looked down and clenched his fist hard enough for blood to spill.

[[…..Alright…Retreat! Everybody fall back!!!]]

After issuing the order, the general breathed a sigh of relief. On their way back, Sebastian picked up Lucas’ right arm which was severed from the bite. He had wanted to get the left arm as well but it was thrown into the black flame of the dragon which was scattered around the battlefield due to the breath attack from earlier.

Fortunately, the dragon seemed to lose interest in attacking and stayed on his position defending the pathway towards the exit.

With a couple of help from other vampires, they managed to remove the boulder on top of Lucas’ severed left leg. The sword which Sebastian gave him was nowhere to be found so it would be most likely to assume that it was eaten together with Lucas.

[[Now…let’s return…]]

[[Yes]]

As they confirmed that as the end of the quest, the department leaders started to issue their orders.

“Alright people, time to make that movie.”

“I want this part emphasized out…yes…then this part…..like that.”

“For the part where Lucas pushed Sebastian, since he was shouting his name back then, we’ll mute it out to emphasize the tragedy.”

“Make sure to close in on Lucas when he watched his comrades burn, this’ll get more emotion out of it.”

And so on and so forth.

They had started to discuss among themselves how to improve the trailer and movie.

Some of the employees were still crying but managed to listen successfully to their leaders’ commands.

There were also some that were happily discussing about the fighting part, most of these were boys of the younger age.

“Sir, is there something wrong?”

Lilianne, who was about to exit the room and resume her work, was surprised to see Trask still sitting in his chair with folded arms and decides to ask.

“Hm? What do you mean? Or rather, where’s everybody going?”

“Where you say…the battle has ended so they all went out to work on the movie.”

Lilianne was troubled how to answer something from her boss that were supposed to have been common sense.

However, she later knows that Trask knows common sense better than her.

“What are you saying, the video’s still going here. There’s no way that is the end.”

“!?”

At hearing this, Lilianne turned immediately to the screen, true enough, the video was still playing, though it was only showing the dragon sleeping right now, but there’s still connection.

“N-no way…”

“O-oi oi…are you kidding me?”

Pearce overheard their conversation and was also shocked.

He ran towards the exit immediately and shouted to everyone.

“Hey guys!!! The video’s still not over!!!!!”

Quite the loud mouth as usual. After hearing him shout, some employees returned a questioned look, some knew what his words meant and was wide eyed.

“N-no way…then he’s….”

“He’s still….”

“……Oh god…”

They all looked at each other confirming their own theories.

“““Lucas is still alive!!!???”””

+ + +

Darkness...the world around him was dark.

Despite having maxed out his [Night Vision], Lucas saw nothing but darkness.

Then, in that darkness, a bright red light appeared and a voice echoed in the space.

[...kill....damn...vampires...must....entire....race....my wrath...]

There seemed to be disturbance, the voice sounded weak and Lucas can only hear a bit.

Though with his head still not catching up to the situation, he didn't understand what was heard.

Soon, the light vanished along with the voice and Lucas gained consciousness.

“Where...am I?”

He looked around him but he can’t remember any of it.

The floor was sticky with gooes all over it. The walls had vein like object attached to it and seemed to be pulsating.

“Ah, that’s right....I died....is this hell?”

Still in daze, Lucas stared at the pulsating wall.

Pulsating.....pulsating...

“Wait!!! Why is the wall pulsating!!!???”

Lucas tried to feel the wall with his hands, that’s when finally he noticed his body.

Where his arms should be were empty spaces.

Not just his arms, his left leg was also gone.

In [World Gate], severed limbs don’t grow back when healed. Healing only covers wounds, curses or illness. One has to attach the severed limb to the body then heal them in order to connect it.

Though even without the limb, if healed on the severed part of the body, closing the wound, the player can still regain their maximum HP.

Also, if one were to die within 12 hours since losing the limb, it will go back when you log in once again, logging out though, will not have the same effect.

If the 12 hour time limit is over, the limb disappears and you can no longer connect it.

“T-that’s right...I was in the game...then Sebastian....”

Finally catching up, Lucas finally knew where he is.

The dragon’s stomach.

“H-haha...what’s up with this....you have to be kidding me....”

He noticed how his body was actually covered with bodily fluids and saliva and almost threw up.

Lucas was really weak at disgusting things like this. Though he can handle seeing a wound, blood or severed limb, grotesque things are a no go.

“D-damn, I can’t believe this....”

Even though he said that, he knew this is real and he can’t escape it.

On this type of situation, one would make their way to the intestines and well escape on the creature’s back side.

Just the thought of this made Lucas’s stomach turn upside down.

He can kill himself to regain his limbs and get out but he didn’t want to lose this quest that he had thought to be over. If he does, then the loss of the vampires that died before would be in vain. He didn’t want that. Not when he selfishly lead them thinking he can defeat a dragon. His pride won’t allow it.

“My sword....there....”

Lucas weakly looked around and spotted the sword Sebastian lent him.

He tried to stand up with one foot but he failed and fell face forward to the ground. Since his face was near the sword, he struggled to crawl and bit the grip of the sword with his teeth.

That was the only way to hold the sword in his current state.

He stabbed the meat floor with the tip of the sword and heard a deafening cry from above.

*GRAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH*

Since he damaged the dragon with [Draughtbane], he was able to absorb his life, but Lucas paid no attention to that and used the sword as support for standing up.

After much hardship, he finally gained balance standing up.

“There is no way am I going to escape through a monster’s butt.”

Saying that, Lucas willed himself to escape through the mouth instead and walked off.

Though it was hard to keep skipping as he walked, he can only continue to do so since had no choice. Then, a familiar window appeared.

*ting*

Notice
You have learned a new skill, (Passive) [Mouth Mastery] Beginner LVL 1 (0.00%)!

Due to using your mouth instead of your hands, you will now be able to do work with only your mouth.

Lucas can only stare at these windows in disbelief.

“To think skills like can even exist...”

Well, he was still grateful for it and began to walk again.

Suddenly, he saw something move.

With his [Night Vision], he saw a black ball at the size of a basketball with bat wings on its sides and a pointed needle below it. What’s more, when it turned around, he realized that the flying ball was actually a flying eyeball.

As the large eyeball spotted Lucas, it began its attack and charged at him.

“An [Eye Bat]!!!???”

Lucas tried to defend with his sword. However since he was still unaccustomed with wielding with his mouth, there was a lot of wasted movement and openings.

After a lot of struggle, the eye was finally defeated. Since it was only a Lvl 50, it was practically a mob for Lucas, the only reason why it took so long is because of the absence in Lucas’ limbs.

Encountering several more of the eyes, he finally reached a wide room.

“…This is…”

Lucas, instead of entering the room immediately, Lucas hid his body on the wall beside the entrance.

The reason is because there was someone else in that room, and judging from the aura it gave, it is by no means, an ally. The person wore dark red hooded cloak that had several silver decorations on it. At the back was a symbol that looked like an eye and the more Lucas stared at it, the more uncomfortable he gets. Since the person wore the hood to hide his/her face, there was no way of knowing who the person was or what he/she is.

The person wore six rings, three on each hand, with different gem colors imbedded on it. Red, Blue, Green, Brown, White, and Black. As for why Lucas focused on its hands, it was because the hooded figure was stretching his hands towards a rather oval object the shape of a heart and was pouring magic endlessly from
towards it.

Yes, a heart….a heart…...

Lucas stared at the beating object that constantly contracts and expands, indeed, no matter how you look at it, that thing can only be a heart. And for something that big, it would make sense to assume that that is the heart of Denneth, the dragon.

“A Heart!!!!????”

“!? Who’s there!?”

Like an idiot, Lucas shouted unconsciously and revealed his location.

Since the voice was rather masculine, Lucas assumed that it was a male, since he was discovered, Lucas revealed himself and charged towards the hooded person.

For a person to be inside the dragon, and at the heart too…this could only mean one thing to Lucas.

“This was how they brainwashed the dragon!!!??? By brainwashing from the inside!!!???”

As for why it had to be in the heart, Lucas can only make a guess. It would seem that no matter what world it is, feelings and emotion is still stronger than knowledge and memories. If they had sealed this feelings and emotion, then knowledge and memories are nothing but useless data. Meaning, brainwashing will be
a lot easier.

Since Lucas wasn’t too used to using only one foot, the enemy managed to dodge easily.

It seems that he doesn’t need to be always pouring mana on the heart, and can move freely. Though Lucas didn’t know for how long, he knows that the enemy can’t be free forever and have to go back to pouring mana at some point. After all, if one can leave after making the spell, then there would be no need for this guy to stay here.

Thinking that, Lucas continued his assault. With each attack, he grew familiar of fighting with one foot and using the mouth to strike with the sword. Soon enough, he was able to injure the person little by little.

“Tch, enough!”

The enemy reached out his right arm towards Lucas and murmured a spell.

Because Lucas was too busy attacking, he didn’t hear the cant, however, he heard the final word that triggered the magic.

“[Wind Cutter!]”

The ring with the green gemstone shone and dozens of transparent blades emerged in front of him hurling towards Lucas.

“M-magic!?”

Lucas kicked sideways in order to dodge the wind blades, however, his enemy wasn’t done with his attack and chained another magic.

“[Tornado!]”

Wind started to spin around Lucas, but just this wasn’t enough to damage him, is what Lucas thought and simply waited for the spell to end.

But, that was his mistake, the wind blades that was fired earlier was also carried by the tornado, making the blades spin and go in different directions. Having not been able to read the trajections, Lucas can do nothing but be cut into ribbons.

It was no longer a separate magic called [Wind Cutter] and [Tornado], it was now more like one [Tornado Blade].

“A-a combination magic!? That was possible!?”

With a thud, Lucas fell on his knees and fell face first on the ground after the magic disappeared.

“Hmph, how dare you disturb me, a demi-vampire, you lowly human. This is your end.”

Saying that, the enemy took out a dagger and prepared to stab Lucas above him.

With a single swoosh, Lucas felt intense pain as the dagger dug on his skull.

“Che, that will serve you a lesson, killing you will be too easy. Instead, bleed and suffer to death.”

Lucas felt that the demi-vampire smiled as he turned his back on him. But with the pain on his head, he wasn’t able to think straight.

As this was a game, life is converted to numbers as HP, a single strike like this with a poorly made dagger won’t give much damage, so Lucas’ HP was only decreasing steadily.

Of course cutting the head will lead to certain kill, and as well as a strike through the heart or the brain. But the dagger was only inches away from his brain. So he wasn’t given certain death. But instead, he was to suffer intense pain. So painful he really wished he was dead instead.

Pain in the game was controlled to a certain level, if exceeded, he would be forced to log out for health measures. But that does not apply to constant pain like this, though he can only feel the pain of being injected, the illusion of knowing that a dagger was stabbed on your head plus the fear and despair of being left alone to suffer made Lucas feel more pain.

“It hurts…..it hurts……….someone…….help……………”

He was already tearing up from the intense pain that he felt and began asking for help.

After a while of despair, knowing that there won’t be any help coming, he began to spat out curses to the person who placed him in this situation.

“It hurts………..”

“Damn…..demi-vampire………”

“…………this is all his fault…”

“…………demi-vampire bastard…………………...curse you…….”

“Curse you!........This damn demi-vampire………………..Damn you to hell!!!”

[…..Boy…]

“!?”

Lucas heard a different voice inside his head. One he heard before coming here.

That’s right, it was the same voice at that time when I was unconscious.

[So you finally heard me…..I’ve been calling you for a while now…….but it seems that the pain is still clouding your mind….]

“…Who are you?”

[Denneth…Denneth the Nocturnal]

The answer shocked Lucas that he forgot the pain momentarily.

[Boy…my heart is sealed…….I can’t stay forever…….in my stead…..defeat that bastard sealing my heart…]

“I can’t…..I have no arms, a foot….I can’t even move…”

[Let me pass it onto you……….my wrath…]

Then Lucas heard a familiar sound accompanied by a window.

*ting*

[With this…….you will stand a chance…]

Lucas continued to stare at these windows for a while.

There was no quest window showing up despite him being asked for a favor.

But if he accepted this, can he turn his blade towards the dragon next?

If he doesn’t kill him, the quest won’t end.

However, the true culprit is already known right?

Screw the quest.

“If I don’t kill this bastard now and get quietly killed……I’ll never be able to make myself play this again!”

This bastard that imprisoned the pure blooded vampires.

This bastard that sealed Denneth’s heart and controlled him.

This bastard that killed tens of vampire soldiers just because they wanted to be free.

This bastard that stabbed this infernal blade in my head.

This bastard that drove me to a corner!

This bastard that made me suffer!

This bastard that played around with me like I’m a small fry!

Black aura started to form around him and grew every time he cursed him.

THIS BASTARD THAT DARED TO KILL ME!!!!!!!

The black aura grew larger and brought with it, force comparable to the shockwave Denneth released before.

“W-what is this!?”

The demi-vampire stopped pouring mana on the heart and changed into a defensive stance.

Lucas didn’t know when, but he had already activated [Dragon’s Wrath].

Slowly standing up, Lucas paid no heed to his head still bleeding and his HP decreasing. With the [Draughtbane] on his mouth, with his bloody figure, he revealed intense killing intent as he glared at the enemy in front of him.

[Image: dragon_s_wrath_by_imaginexbreaker27-d8oce9y.jpg]

“H-hii- d-demon! Stay away!”

The demi-vampire cowered and tried to step back, but as he was paralyzed, his step cut short and he fell on his back side.

Though it was quite a funny act to watch as the demi-vampire acting all high and mighty before is now trembling and cowering in fear of the monster he created, Lucas didn’t laugh, much less smile on it. His head was only filled with deep hatred, anger, and revenge on his enemy.

He continued to walk towards the demi-vampire with slow steps. With each step he took, the vampire continued to shrink in fear.

“RRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

“N-no, pleas-!”

Lucas gave everything he had and swung his blade to sever the demi-vampire’s head ignoring the pleading it gave.

Blood gushed out from the demi-vampire’s neck like a fountain, drenching Lucas in blood as it rained down on him.

He continued to stand there in daze.

“Haah…hah….haah…”

+ + +

In the theater room where Trask, Lilianne, Pearce and several other employees gathered to watch Lucas, a dense silence filled the room.

Finally, as he can’t stand the silence, someone among the crowed muttered.

“He did it…..”

The audience looked at each other as if confirming it was real.

“““HE DID IT!!!”””

Sounds of cheers and laughter filled the room, some were crying tears of joy.

They had fast forwarded the time when Lucas was unconscious for 6 hours in order to stay as close as possible in real time as the time in game was three times faster than in real.

They watched as Lucas struggle to stand in one foot, struggle to fight with his mouth, and struggled to live.

Some were crying in pain as if they were the ones stabbed in the head themselves when they saw how much Lucas suffered with dagger just centimeters away from the brain in order to keep him alive.

Some can’t take it anymore and rushed to the bathroom to vomit.

Some decided to stay even if they couldn’t take it anymore.

As they can hear Lucas’ own thoughts by switching the thought filter on, they heard the screams and curses in Lucas’ head. Also the conversation with the dragon.

Of course, they had it turned off most of the time to keep privacy, but since Trask noticed a change in Lucas’ emotion at some point, he had it rewinded and switch on the thought filter.

Because of this, they finally saw the whole picture.

Not only that, they also learned that you can complete a quest despite not following through it and reach a different ending, one which rewards are unknown. This is what an adventure should be.

“Can’t believe the kid actually did it.”

“Fufufu, I told you he can complete it…is what I want to say but, I also didn’t expect this.”

Pearce and Lilianne smiled proudly at the white haired boy they had watched since the start of the quest.

“Haha, that kid’s gonna be great. He’ll be one of the few people that will rock the world, both in real, and in game.”

Trask commented with a smile.

Both Lilianne and Pearce can only tilt their head as to why Trask had said “in real” as well.

Well then, I want that trailer done today and upload it by tomorrow morning, and the movie uploaded the next day. Dismissed.
